Contemporary and Historial Contextual Project

The artists that has inspired me most over the years is Gerhard Richter, I have always found his work interesting and it has always been something I find intriguing.

Gerhard Richter is mainly known as a painter, although he has also worked with collage and photographs. It will be his paintings that I will be mainly talking about especially his oil paints work. I will also be talking about what drew me to his work, in particular I always thought his work looked like a forgotten memory which has always intrigued me as I find trying to piece together the past fascinating and I love the way Richter seems to express this in his work.

A rough outline for presentation

- Introduce Gerhard Richter (background)
- What Inspired him/how his work developed
- How his work has influenced my own work

I knew straight away that I wanted to use Richter as my artist however I was having a hard time incorporating him into my recent work. However, I soon realised that he fit perfectly with it, my recent project is about creating a museum to re-live the past although we do not know all the facts about what actually happened in the past. This relates exactly to Richter as this seems to me what his work is all about. I can use Richter's work to influence my own by looking at how expresses forgotten memories through his work.

The work I am going to talk about it 'Family Hotzel' it is a 76cm x 50cm black and white oil painting on canvas. In the middle of the painting is a man and woman standing next to each other with a little boy between them, they are obviously a family. The boy is holding a long object that can't really be distinguished. The family are standing in front of some bare trees that suggest it is Autumn or Winter. The most interesting this about this painting is that it looks like the edges of everything has been blurred so that it seems to resemble a worn out photograph.
